OTRO MUNDO BEYOND CORCOVADO TOUR
Discover the Hidden Wonders of the Rainforest on a Biodiverse Adventure
This full-day hike offer by Otro Mundo Tours is a superior alternative to the day hike into Corcovado National Park due to its closer proximity, immediate access to primary rain forest, and sparse foot traffic. While open to the public if accompanied by a guide, Rio Piro is mainly used for biological studies and conservation projects, providing a peaceful escape from the crowds of hikers in the national park.
The Piro Reserve boasts an extensive trail network and abundant wildlife, including some of the largest and oldest trees on the Osa Peninsula, as well as large populations of endangered animals. Additionally, the tour focuses on the small wonders of the tropical rainforest, such as the helicopter damselfly, metallic blue and green orchid bees, the hourglass frog, and the glass-winged butterfly. By exploring the complex and interconnected relationships between plants and animals, such as the acacia ant’s defense of the bull-horned acacia tree, we uncover the mysteries of the forest and its incredible biodiversity.
To cap off the tour, we enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the unique rock outcroppings on Piro Beach. We explore the tide pools and admire the uninhabited coastline, listening to the sounds of the large ocean waves crashing against the nearby rocks.

OTRO MUNDO BOAT TOUR, RIO ESQUINAS ESTUARY
A HIDDEN GEM
RIVER EXPERIENCE
The Esquinas River, also known as the “Corners” river, is a remarkable waterway within the Golfo Dulce, renowned for its unspoiled wilderness and ranking as the second largest river system in the region. Embarking on this adventure entails a captivating boat journey across the gulf, presenting an opportunity to encounter pelagic species, along with dolphins, whales, sea snakes, and sea turtles that grace the waters along the way.
As we traverse the gulf, we are greeted by the secluded and untamed coastline of Piedras Blancas National Park. Towering forested hillsides, rugged and untamed, loom over the water’s edge, creating a mesmerizing backdrop. Slowly cruising along the stunning shoreline, we venture into the mouth of the river, where the interconnecting canals wind through a landscape lined with vibrant red mangroves. These canals gradually lead us deeper into the heart of the mangrove forest, where the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) gives way to the majestic white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), standing tall and densely packed, their intricate root mazes weaving an enchanting tapestry.
The tranquility of this environment is broken by the harmonious chorus of endemic bird species that inhabit these distinctive forests. The calls of mangrove hummingbirds and mangrove warblers reverberate through the air, their melodies intermingling with the occasional popping sound of a butter clam reopening. At every bend of the river, a myriad of avian creatures welcomes us, including tiger and boat-billed herons, kingfishers, roseate spoonbills, white ibis, whimbrels, willets, and an abundance of other fascinating species.
Continuing our upstream journey, we pass by forested areas that eventually give way to open pastures framed by the remarkable forests of Piedras Blancas National Park and the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. This diverse landscape offers an astonishing range of habitats, each teeming with its unique bird species, presenting an awe-inspiring opportunity to witness the wonders of nature during a single expedition.
The exploration of the Esquinas River estuary is dictated by the tides….riding the high tide up the river before its peak and exiting as the tide recedes, for a total of 4 hours in the river. Departure times will all depend on the tides but generally runs 4 hours.
