THE BENEFITS OF NATURALLY MADE DARK CHOCOLATE
Naturally made chocolate, especially dark chocolate that contains a high percentage of cacao (70% or higher), can provide a number of health benefits when consumed in moderation.
One of the main health benefits of cacao is its high content of flavonoids, which are plant-based compounds that act as antioxidants in the body. Flavonoids have been shown to help protect against cell damage, reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and lower blood pressure.
Cacao is also a good source of magnesium, which is an important mineral that plays a role in many bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function, immune system health, and bone health. Additionally, cacao contains small amounts of other minerals, such as iron, zinc, and copper.
Moreover, cacao has been shown to have mood-enhancing effects due to the presence of theobromine, a natural stimulant that can improve cognitive function and boost energy levels. Additionally, cacao contains small amounts of caffeine, which can also contribute to its mood-boosting effects.
HISTORY OF OSA PENINSULA CHOCOLATE
The history of chocolate on the Osa Peninsula is closely tied to the indigenous communities that have lived in the region for centuries. The indigenous peoples of the region, including the Boruca, Cabécar, and Ngäbe, have long used cacao as a medicinal and ceremonial plant.
Cacao was first cultivated in Mesoamerica, but its use eventually spread to South America and the Caribbean. Spanish colonizers introduced cacao to Costa Rica in the 17th century, and the crop quickly became an important part of the country’s economy.
On the Osa Peninsula, chocolate production has traditionally been a small-scale, family-run affair. Cacao trees are grown in small plots on family farms, and the beans are harvested and processed by hand using traditional techniques.
In recent years, however, there has been a growing interest in sustainable and organic chocolate production on the Osa Peninsula. Farmers are increasingly using agroforestry techniques to grow cacao alongside other crops, and many are experimenting with new ways of processing and selling their chocolate.
