Closeness to Nature on the Osa Peninsula
Costa Rica, with 26% of the country composed of conservation and natural protected lands, there are colorful options for staying closer to nature.
OSA CAMPING
Costa Rica camping should be well-researched.
In Costa Rica, the first 50 meters from the high tide line belong to the people, meaning that any accessible beach outside of national parks, wildlife refuges, and sensitive areas is legally allowed for camping. However, setting up a tent directly on the beach is not recommended due to potential dangers such as rip currents and sunstroke.
It is crucial to learn about the environment before camping. Some vegetation may look harmless, but it can result in a trip to the emergency room. Insects are prevalent, especially near still waters such as mangroves, and mosquito bites can be relentless.
The Osa Peninsula is known for its balance in nature, but on and around the full moon, no-see-ums or biting midges can be a nuisance near the beach. Additionally, the area experiences 11-foot tides, which should be considered when camping. Proper research can help ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience on the Osa Peninsula.
OSA GLAMPING
Glamping in Costa Rica is gaining popularity with each passing day. The Osa Peninsula is home to several lodges that offer a unique glamping experience. The accommodations consist of rainforest safari tents that are specially designed to blend with the natural tropical environment. These tents are quite spacious and come equipped with private solid cement/rock bathrooms for your convenience.
OSA 4WD EXPERIENCE
The Costa Rican 4wd-experience is becoming more popular here on the Osa Peninsula. And camper vans or tent top 4WD rentals have their advantages. But camper vans have their limits on the dirt roads of the Osa Peninsula and should probably not venture beyond the main paved road that goes to Matapalo.
The 4WD rental outfits offer packages of camping equipment like stoves, dishes, water tanks, sleeping bags, and additional tents (to set up on the ground for more people). Some of the lodges on the peninsula have places to park, so you can stay the night and enjoy some of the amenities offered by the lodge.

TIPS
Think shade.
Cleanliness is crucial…ants!
It’s a good idea to sleep off the ground…ants rule!
Evenings can be wet. May through December, 80% of the rain falls in the evening and overnight.
Water is super important. Make it a routine to drink more often and drink more than you normally would.
Days are short; with the Osa being only 8 degrees from the equator, sunsets and sunrises vary little and give us 12 hour days.
Take a nap (siesta) to avoid the height of the heat during the tropical days. Costa Rica sun at mid-day is ridiculous and one of the best ways to prevent heat stroke is a nap in a hammock in the shade.
