OSA CAMPING
Costa Rica allows public access to the first 50 meters from the high tide line on most beaches—making beach camping on the Osa Peninsula legal in many areas outside national parks, wildlife refuges, and protected zones. However, while it may be tempting to set up right on the sand, this is not recommended due to safety risks such as strong tides, rip currents, and excessive sun exposure.
The Osa Peninsula is wild and beautiful, but campers must be prepared. Certain rainforest plants may appear harmless but can cause serious irritation or injury. Insects, particularly around mangrove areas, are abundant—mosquitoes and no-see-ums (biting midges) can be especially aggressive during the full moon or in humid, low-lying zones. The region also experiences tides as high as 11 feet, which must be accounted for when selecting a safe camping spot.

OSA 4WD EXPERIENCE
For more rugged explorers, the Costa Rica 4WD camping experience is becoming increasingly popular. On the Osa Peninsula, 4WD camper vans and rooftop tent rentals allow travelers to explore remote beaches and rainforest roads at their own pace.
That said, many of the Osa’s roads are unpaved and challenging, especially during the rainy season. Camper vans should generally stick to the main route toward Cabo Matapalo or Puerto Jiménez, as the deeper jungle trails may require high-clearance 4WD vehicles.
Many 4WD rental companies in Costa Rica offer full camping kits, including stoves, water tanks, cookware, sleeping bags, and even extra ground tents. Some ecolodges offer secure parking areas where overlanders can camp and access lodge amenities like showers, meals, or guided tours.
