CHACARITA – PUERTO JIMENEZ – CARATE BEACH

The drive from Chacarita to Puerto Jiménez and onward to Carate is more than just a road trip, it’s an adventure into one of the most biodiverse corners of the planet. With the Osa Peninsula Road you’ll pass waterfalls, family-run farms, wildlife sanctuaries, and hidden reserves that reveal the Osa Peninsula’s rich natural and cultural treasures. Each stop invites you to slow down, explore, and connect with the rainforest, the coastline, and the communities that call this wild paradise home.

The road from Chacarita to Carate takes travelers deep into the wild beauty of the Osa Peninsula. Paved highways lead as far as Puerto Jiménez, the peninsula’s main hub, after which the route becomes a rugged dirt road winding through rivers, rainforest, and coastal views. While passable much of the year, the stretch beyond Puerto Jiménez is best suited for 4×4 vehicles, especially in the rainy season when water crossings rise. This journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination, offering glimpses of scarlet macaws, monkeys, and untouched jungle along the way.

This guide highlights the best tour stops along the scenic journey down the Osa Peninsula. Use it to plan your trip and discover eco-tourism experiences along the way.
