Two Gateways to the Osa Wilderness

We’re often asked: What’s the difference between Puerto Jimenez vs Drake Bay?

Both are main gateways to Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, but each offers a unique experience. From adventurous rainforest treks to secluded beaches and incredible wildlife encounters, knowing what sets these destinations apart can help you plan the perfect eco-travel itinerary in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.

Puerto Jiménez: The Rustic Gateway to the East

Best For: Adventure seekers, cultural immersion, families, couples and budget-conscious travelers
Atmosphere: Laid-back, local, rooted in nature

Located on the eastern side of the Osa Peninsula, Puerto Jiménez is the largest town in the region and the main walk-in access point to Corcovado National Park via the Carate/La Leona entrance. It serves as a hub for both travelers and locals, offering a down-to-earth experience with incredible proximity to nature.

Puerto Jimenez Highlights:

  • Access to Corcovado National Park via La Leona Ranger Station and Los Patos by foot. By boat from Puerto Jimenez.
  • Easy launch point for Golfo Dulce kayaking, dolphin watching, whale watching (in season) and mangrove tours
  • A vibrant mix of Tico culture, shops, restaurants, and artisan crafts, with a goldmining history
  • Eco-lodges and retreats nestled deep in the surrounding rainforest
  • Close to wild beaches, wildlife corridors, and sustainability initiatives

Getting There:

Drive or fly into Puerto Jiménez Airport (PJZ). The town is connected by road to San José and other parts of southern Costa Rica.

Drake Bay: The Remote Jewel of the West

Best For: Couples, honeymooners, nature photographers, luxury and ocean lovers
Atmosphere: Secluded, romantic, pristine

Tucked into the rugged northwest corner of the peninsula, Drake Bay is accessible by road, by boat or small aircraft, making it feel like an untouched Eden. It offers boat access to both Corcovado National Park and Caño Island Biological Reserve, where ocean adventures abound.

Drake Bay Highlights:

  • Snorkeling and scuba diving at Caño Island, a marine biodiversity hotspot
  • Corcovado National Park access via boat to Sirena stations. No walk-in entrances
  • Breathtaking sunsets and remote beaches that are perfect for relaxing
  • Small-town feel in a more compacted area next to the Pacific Ocean
  • Whale watching and dolphin tours during key migration seasons

Getting There:

Fly into Drake Bay Airport (DRK), drive a dirt road with paved parts, or take a scenic boat ride from Sierpe. Access is more limited, but the reward is seclusion.
