A Relaxing Tour with Nature’s Slowest Creatures

Experience sloths in their natural habitat, protected by a local family on the Osa Peninsula Sloth Tour. This unique adventure began with the creation of a bird garden and a path for their grandmother, which led to the discovery of numerous sloths in the family’s gardens. The passion for planting and a desire to excel led Don Toño and his wife Nai, along with their seven children, to pursue their dream at the age of 37.

Now at the age of 74, Antonio proudly guides visitors through Finca de la Perica, sharing his knowledge of agriculture that he has practiced since childhood, as well as inspiring life stories. This tour is not only a chance to encounter these incredible creatures but also to learn about the agricultural culture that has helped make Costa Rica the country it is today.

Sloths play an important role in seed dispersal and help to maintain the health of the rainforest ecosystem.

The Osa Peninsula is considered to be one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, and sloths are a key part of its ecosystem.

SLOTH BEHAVIOR

Sloths are known for their slow-moving behavior, but there is more to their behavior than just being slow.

Sleep: Sloths sleep for up to 15 hours a day and are most active at night.

Movement: Sloths move very slowly and deliberately, using their long arms and sharp claws to cling to trees.

Diet: Sloths are herbivores and primarily eat leaves, fruits, and flowers.

Digestion: Sloths have a unique digestive system that allows them to extract nutrients from tough plant matter that other animals can’t digest.

Social behavior: Sloths are solitary animals and only come together to mate.

Defense: Sloths are not aggressive and rely on camouflage and stillness to avoid predators.

Reproduction: Female sloths give birth to one offspring per year, and the young stay with the mother for up to six months.

During the Perica Sloth tour on the Osa Peninsula, visitors may see two different species of sloths: the two-toed sloth and the three-toed sloth. Tour guides will often point out other wildlife and interesting flora and fauna along the way. Our Sloth tours are conducted on foot, and visitors should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for hiking.

It’s important to note that sloths are wild animals and should not be touched or approached too closely. Visitors should always follow their guide’s instructions and respect the animals’ space and natural environment.
